The Tale of The Craftsmen’s Path
A devised work by Ruth Kanner and the actors of the theatre group: Shirley Gal, Ronen Babluki, Adi Meirovitch, Siwar Awwad / Solafa Makhoul | Research and Curation: Shira Shoval | Music: Ilan Green | Design: Sivan Wainstein Levi | Lighting Design: Shaked Vax | Media: Shira Yovel
This performance grew out of wandering along the paths and through the workshops of Kiryat HaMelacha – a craftspeople center in the south of Tel Aviv – while observing working practices, meeting craftspeople and gathering their stories.
We observed patterns, molds, coils, people, and words; we looked at acts of production and repair; we paid attention to movements, sounds, patterns of action, and patterns of speech. Through these, we discovered something of the face of the local narrative – of “Israeliness” – as it reveals itself through tools, products, and conversations.
The development of this piece and its presentation as a work-in-progress were created as part of the exhibition “Material Intelligence: Action Research” (curated by Yair Barak and Shira Shoval), a collaboration between TA Tarbut Kiryat HaMelacha and the Benyamini Contemporary Ceramics Center. Special thanks to Matan Oren and the entire team!
